Ultra-Conservative Ex- Legislator José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile's New Leader.
After a definitive final ballot, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Triumph
With more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third presidency, having previously been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Platform Focused On Security and Migration
Known for his staunch Catholic views and admiration for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely focused on promises to tackle growing crime and radically curb migration.
He repeatedly cited migrants, notably the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the race, he issued an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face expulsion.
His policy ideas featured controversial measures such as erecting holding facilities, barriers, perimeter fencing, and strengthening the military presence on the northernmost frontier.
Amid a Broader Shift
Several analysts view Kast's victory as aligning with a broader rightward trend in South America, similar to this year's political results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other experts further view it as a continuation of the regular alternation of power between left and right-wing leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Leading Without a Strong Mandate
In spite of his sweeping popular vote victory, Kast is not expected to hold an clear majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are combined together.
This political landscape may hinder his policy goals, including a vow to reduce public spending by billions within 18 months—a plan for which he has not offered a clear explanation.
"There are numerous questions about how a Kast presidency will be that we don't know because he has not said his methods for achieve them," commented a political science analyst.
