During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison constructed from the past of Vecna. The search for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode has them witness again a defining event from Henry's youth—a moment that could contain the key to defeating him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma went deeper than a fight for life.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which transported a warship into a realm dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the captain, who came back in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists stole research materials to give to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. The man in the cavern is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the case almost certainly contained samples of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would genetically impart to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the case could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The prequel shows that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later as a different person. From then on, he fights the influence of a dark entity, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the shadow monster in the past.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear of that cave demonstrates how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to become stronger.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale to come.
