Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Remarks
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, reacting to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering hard hits on opponents. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.
The Cause of the Latest Dispute
Wilson's response came after Payton delivered remarks following the Broncos' remarkable comeback win over the Giants. The coach remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach stated.
Context of the Coach-QB Partnership
- Wilson was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M extension.
- The Broncos went 4-11 in his debut year prior to the team brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the player from getting injured.
Had Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious breakup between the player and his coach.
