Meg Ryan has posted a tribute to the deceased director Rob Reiner, who directed her in the iconic romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.

A Heartbreaking Event

Reiner was found dead with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home at the weekend.

“We will miss this man so deeply…” Ryan shared on Instagram, accompanying a photo of them together. “Thank you, Rob and Michelle [sic], for the way you believe in true love, in fairy tales, and in laughter. Your trust in people's goodness and your love for this nation are remembered.”

Charges Filed

Reiner’s son Nick, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and appeared in court today. He’s being detained without the option of bail. Reports indicate that Reiner’s daughter Romy was the one who located her father.

“I must hold onto hope that their tale doesn't conclude here, that awareness can be heightened from this,” Ryan continued. “While uncertain, I suspect they'd wish for a hopeful, compassionate outcome that fosters mutual understanding and peace.”

Children Share Their Grief

Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy released a message today. “Language fails to capture the daily agony we endure,” they said. “Losing our parents in such a horrific way is a devastation beyond comprehension. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”

Peers Pay Their Respects

Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, joined in remembering Reiner via comments shared yesterday along with names including Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.

“His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant,” the tribute noted. “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. His finest trait was granting creative liberty. He valued input and made you part of the team. Collaborators felt like a unified team. Being guided by him was an honor, yet just one facet of his impact.”

When Harry Met Sally was a hit with both critics and audiences in 1989, grossing more than $93 million worldwide and earning Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.

Rob Reiner first encountered Michele Singer Reiner whilst filming When Harry Met Sally. The pair were connected through Barry Sonnenfeld, a director and friend.

Reiner’s notable filmography comprised classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were married for 36 years.
