A free-to-play playable preview is set to become available on the seventh of January, granting a generous taste into the game's beginning segments. Critically, all progress achieved within this demo is eligible to be carried over directly into the full game upon its February release.

Beyond Just a Straightforward Re-release: The Thorough Transformation

This project represents a ground-up reinterpretation of the seminal 2000 JRPG, first titled Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. Taking a significant departure from other Dragon Quest re-releases, like the recently released HD-2D iterations, this remake embraces a charming three-dimensional art style. The world appear to resemble detailed model sets, with characters featuring a whimsical stylized appearance.

"Considering the 3DS remake, the main quest was remained quite extended. So we reached a determination that we wanted to streamline the story, [and] craft an adventure for modern gamers."

Major Mechanical Enhancements and Updates

Square Enix has implemented numerous modernizations to streamline the original gameplay loop. These include:

  • Expedited Overworld Battles: Inspired by contemporary role-playing games, low-level enemies are now defeated instantly on the overworld map eliminating the need for entering a separate turn-based combat screen.
  • Adjustable Combat Pace: Players can speed up battle sequences to rapidly get past simpler fights.
  • New Job Mechanics: One brand new job class has been introduced for this reimagining. Additionally, characters now have the option to master a secondary vocation, greatly enhancing customization depth.

Such refinements are aimed at mitigate a key the 2000 game's frequent points of feedback: its daunting scope. That initial adventure was known to require over 100 hours to complete. This new edition was expressly designed to improve flow and reduce any filler.
