Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials expressed anger after Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "with execution" following their release of a disputed video.

The Content That Triggered the Dispute

The recorded message, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who previously served in military or intelligence capacities.

"Similar to us, you all took an pledge to safeguard and defend this constitution," the officials stated in the short video. "Currently, the dangers to our democratic foundation aren't just from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our laws are explicit, you can reject improper directives, you can reject illegal orders, you must reject illegal orders. No one has to carry out commands that contravene the legal system or our founding principles."

Trump's Incensed Response

The recorded statement appeared to trigger a furious response from the previous commander-in-chief.

On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate post, he wrote: "This constitutes really serious, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Officials Respond

Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader released a combined declaration censuring the remarks.

"Partisan aggression has no position in the United States," they stated. "Representatives who appeared in the video all acted our country with great loyalty and excellence. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous threats of violence against elected officials, and urge GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."

The party representatives also stated that they had been in communication with security officials "to make certain the protection of these representatives and their families."

"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme social media posts and recant his aggressive language before he causes harm," the announcement continued.

Representatives' Firm Reaction

The officials who appeared in the video also released a statement.

"We are veterans and security experts who care for this nation and took an oath to protect and uphold the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to keep it. No warning, coercion, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred obligation."

"What's most telling is that the ex-president considers it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to reiterate the law," they continued. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their backs as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and obligation to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They stated: "All citizens must join forces and denounce the former president's requests for our death and political violence. This is a period for ethical certainty."

More Partisan Responses

The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of government members."

He stated: "This represents an outright THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should censure this without delay and absolutely."

The Republican House speaker justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "It is very risky, you have prominent officials of Congress telling troops to ignore directives, I think that's without precedent in US history."

The Conservative representative also allegedly stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the crime of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the terminology and decide all that."

White House Statement

During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when asked by a media member, "Would the president want to kill members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Certainly not."

"It's important to note about what the president is reacting to," the representative stated. "We see active officials of the American legislature who coordinated to arrange a video message to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the president's proper directives."

She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can cause fatalities, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are essentially supporting."
