Chicago's MLB Team Land Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on an Major Two-Year Contract.

In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the South Side team have officially added slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract bringing in the power-hitting player.

Deal Structure and Added Benefits

The agreement includes a seven-figure signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with annual pay of $16M for the next season and seventeen million for the final year.

Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • Half a million dollars for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
  • $250K for placing fourth through 10th.
  • $250,000 for being named the Rookie of the Year honor.

The contract provides that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his permission and grants him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the term. Extra provisions include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..

Transfer Payment and Franchise History

As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club are also entitled to a supplemental fee of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese-born to play for the White Sox, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 in February, bolsters a promising core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a last-place season, placing at the bottom in the AL Central but representing a significant improvement from the previous campaign.

The winner of back-to-back league MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami made history with a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, eclipsing the single-season record for a player in Japan previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His last year was shortened to just 56 appearances due to an side strain. Despite striking out 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. Early in his career playing primarily at first, he has since transitioned to third.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a walk-off double that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic 6-5 victory. The following day in the final against the Team USA, he blasted a game-tying home run in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 championship win.

The new White Sox addition is slated to be officially presented at a introductory event on Monday.
