Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this charming family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
